Changers:

I'm sorry for two emails today, but I've gotten more about the election and I have a very important vigil on the bottom of the page and a cartoon.

Meg

1. More election results:

The Springfield Board of Commissioners stayed Democratic as incumbent Alison Peirce won by 70 votes in Erdenheim.  The Democrats took control four years ago when Alison won by 19 votes.  We worked very hard on this election.  I was unopposed in Ward 2 (Wyndmoor).   Jeff Harbison

the Democrats won every race in all of area 9/District 154.  Springfield retained their Democrat majority on the Board of Commissioners and in addition to Deborra Pancoe, Allyson Dobbs also won in her contest for borough council in Jenintown.  However the ounty judges race results are too sad - can't figure that out.  Penny Cutler

The turnout of Democrats was lower again than Republicans.  I haven't analyzed the figures yet, but in Montco I'll bet that it was 7 - 10%.  The problem of turnout was notieable across the state, but especially in Philadelphia.  We really need to work on getting a more committed base that will always turn out.  There was a vary noticeable absence of younger voters out yesterday.  There is a lot of work to do if we are to preserve the good work everyone did last year.  This Election needs to serve as our wake-up call!  Great wins yesterday by Art and Kathy.   Steve McCarter

 Good morning changers:

It seems that there is some good election news and some bad.  If you have more election news please email me and let me know.  Thanks.
Meg

1.  Congratulations to Art Haywood & Kathy Hampton (both changers) for their decisive win in Cheltenham.  The ballot initiative was also defeated, but I suggest Cheltenham residents read the article in the Times Chronicle (http://tinyurl.com/yj92sfa). I found the last two paragraphs interesting.  Let me know what you think.

2.  In Jenkintown, Deborrah Pancoe (another changer) and Ed Foley won. ( I'm not sure about the other candidates).

3.  Judges:

As of this mornings' news, Lois Murphy was the only Democrat to win on the court of common pleas.  There were some problems with voting machines so I hope I'm wrong about this.

4.  Unemployment Insurance extension

The Senate version of this bill will extend unemployment insurance benefits to workers in all states for up to 14 weeks, with an additional six weeks of benefits for workers in states with an unemployment rate of above 8.5 percent.  The bill will also encourage states to let victims of sexual assault and domestic violence quality for unemployment benefits if they had to leave a job.

5.  Health Care

Lieberman enjoys a number of privileges bestowed upon him by the Democratic leadership in the Senate. They need to make it crystal clear to Joe Liebermanthat his actions have consequences and that if he tries to sink health care reform by filibustering the public option, he'll lose his committee chairmanship. The same ought to go for any senator who filibusters the public option.

On Wednesday, CREDO is joining with some of our progressive allies to deliver that message to the Senate. Already, over 116,690 people have joined you in signing our petition calling on the Senate Democratic leadership to strip any senator who filibusters the public option of his or her committee chairmanship. We want to deliver as many signatures as we can. Can you help us reach 125,00 signatures by Wednesday by spreading the word?

6.  Health Care House push

It looks like the House health care bill might be voted on this week.  If you possibly can,

Come to the PUP office, 112 N. Broad Street, 11th Floor on Wednesday, Thursday or Friday nights at 5:10 PM
And come for a few hours on Sat. any time between 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM

Email Athena at aford@philaup.org with questions/to RSVP
