2. Video at the Hiway
You are invited to join the Southeastern Pennsylvania First Suburbs Project and other community leaders for a special screening and discussion of The New Metropolis.
When: Thursday, October 8th, Doors open at 6:30 PM, Film Screening at 7:00 PM
Where: Hiway Theatre 212 Old York Road Jenkintown, PA 19046
Over the past two years, the First Suburbs Project has convened summits and forums to raise awareness and develop consensus solutions for addressing some of the region’s most pressing issues – aging infrastructure, unfair housing policies, unbalanced transportation investments, and inequitable education finance policies. This summer, we have also been sponsoring strategy discussions and previews of the documentary film, The New Metropolis, across the region. The final event in that series will take place on October 8th, the date of the WHYY film premiere. Film director, Andrea Torrice, is expected to be in attendance.
The New Metropolis, a two-part documentary, highlights the fact that the challenges we face do not just occur here in our region, but also in older suburbs throughout the United States. Filmmaker Andrea Torrice’s account of the rise and fall of the nation’s older, developed first suburbs is comprised of two episodes: A Crack in the Pavement: Re building America’s First Suburbs; and The New Neighbors: How One Town Created a Vibrant, Integrated Suburb.
3. Two items on health care:
a. This first one is from Health Care for America now and targets the various insurance companies.
Click here if your insurance company is CIGNA
Click here if your insurance company is WellPoint or Blue Cross
Click here if your insurance company is UnitedHealth
Click here if you don't know your insurance company, or if you're uninsured
b) This second one is geared for the state concerning home health care for the elderly. We will all get old, so help out on this one.
It's crunch time for keeping the rights of seniors, people with disabilities, and home caregivers on the table in Harrisburg. Our neighbors need you to speak out for them, now more than ever. Keystone Progress is supporting the PA Seniors for Homecare Campaign and urges you to click here now to tell Governor Rendell that you support everyone's right to home care, and the Consumer Workforce Council.
4. Environment: While you are calling your senators about health care, be sure to ask them to support clean energy jobs legislation.
5. Cheltenham Adult School: I am always quoting Nicholas Kristoff, the editorial writer from the New York Times. Now is your chance to meet him.
Nicholas Kristof, the New York Times columnist who has written movingly of women’s issues around the world, is speaking at the Five Star Forum at Cheltenham High School on October 20th at 8 p.m. Tickets are 20 dollars for adults; 10 for students. Since all of you are well connected with political and ethical issues (and people who are interested in such issues), I’m taking the liberty of forwarding this flyer, and hoping you’ll encourage your friends and colleagues to attend.
You can purchase tickets at the door.
