October 12, 2009 Daily Information and Musing
Good morning changers!
After a beautiful fall weekend, we have clouds on this first day of the work week. I have eight items in this email. Let me know your opinions (I have gotten many responses to my emails and I love them). Let me know, too, if you have burning issues you would like to see discussed in email and/or at a meeting.
Thanks for your support.
Meg
1. Afghanistan
I have tried to make these emails full of information for local and national and international issues which Obama is trying to tackle. So much is going on in our ever changing world. Afghanistan has been big in the news lately and it so reminds my of my college years when we were protesting the war in Viet Nam. My father fought Rommel in North Africa during World War II and he was wounded in Sicily. He was awarded the Silver Star (for taking over a town in Sicily which was a key to the rail road system) and the Purple Heart. During the Viet Nam war, he made contacts in Canada in case my brothers passed their physicals (which they didn't). I strongly believe that we need to recall our troops and instead work in development of the infrastructure (the topic of our January 10 meeting). Here is an article by Fareed Zakaria who has written a fascinating book and he is an opinion writer for Newsweek.

Frank Rich, who writes for the opinion section of the Sunday New York Times, is another one of my favorites. Here is his take on Afghanistan.

3. Anna's event from Connie Collins Brick
"I was hoping that you could post a big thank you for all of the support for Anna's event - that was the kind of community support we've been promoting and there were several at the event that were there from the BTCB emails. Our goal was to raise $2,000 and our final total was $7,800. That's an amazing sign of a solid community"
4. Sports
How about those Phillies?? I didn't stay up to watch the game and our papers were delayed in delivery because of the late hour, but I really appreciated the internet today to find out we won. The Eagles are doing really well. It's good to be a Philadelphian today.
5. Steering Committee
If anyone is interested in joining our steering committee, please contact me. Come to our meeting at my house at 7 PM on Wednesday night. RSVP for directions.
6. Wednesday, October 28, 2009
Our monthly meeting this month is the coming election. Please remember to vote on November 3 and bring a few Democrat friends with you. So far we have the following people coming.
Art Haywood (Cheltenham)
Kathy Hampton (Cheltenham)
Nate Kleinman (Jenkintown)
Ed Foley (Jenkintown)
Deborah Pancoe (Jenkintown)
Stephen Burns (Cheltenham)
If you know anyone running for a position who wants to come and introduce themselves to our group, please let me know who, what township, what position, and what email.
7. Immigration
Lou Dobbs of CNN has more and more used his place as a news anchor to spout his right wing philosophies. If you want to sign a petition asking that he be removed from their network, here is the link.
Lou Dobbs pushes conspiracy theories, faulty reporting, and rhetoric dangerous to the Latino community.
Yet CNN contiues to broadcast Lou Dobbs Tonight as a "news program." That needs to end.
Tell CNN to remove
Lou Dobbs from their network.
Click here to sign the petition at BastaDobbs.org.
8. Environment
In the coming weeks, Congress will be developing plans for cutting down on carbon dioxide and other pollutants in the environment. I will be sending more information as it is discussed more. We will have a meeting devoted to the environment and development's effect on the environment this winter. We need strong laws to combat global warming and we need to tell our national and state officials about our concerns. Please call your federal and state congress people and tell them.
